Gaurav Gupta is one of the most celebrated and innovative couturiers in India, and a global name on the rise. The Central Saint Martins, London graduate has created a niche for his eponymous label as a progressive couturier and carved a world that is future primitive, reflected through his sculpture-like garments. Over a decade of merging indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques with his idea of the future, Gaurav has delivered and sustained a world that is Indian at its core and boundless in its form and emerged as one of the strongest voices in couture and fashion from India. Pinning modern couture on the world map, his collections have since been spotted at various red-carpet appearances like the Emmys and Golden Globes, and in editorial content internationally. They have been worn by eminent persons in cinema, art, music and fashion across the world, including Lady Victoria Hervey and Nicole Scherzinger and actresses like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Aishwarya Rai closer home. His creations have adorned magazine covers like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan and international publications like Nylon and Bello. Another turning point arose with Gaurav’s reinvention of the traditional sari – a living costume as old as the country itself. His pre-draped, pre-pleated and stitched saris with gothic and art nouveau undertones, three-dimensional metal and leather embroideries and the novel sari gowns began an entirely new language in Indian wear and gradually in couture, as perceived hitherto in India.
A highlight for the year has been the launch of Gaurav Gupta Man, which was introduced in November 2018 with a spectacular show with GQ and Shahid Kapoor as the showstopper. The menswear collection has evolved tremendously this year and been seen on celebrities like Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Karan Johar and Siddharth Malhotra, to name a few.
Gaurav’s past couture shows have always caught eyeballs and been one of the most awaited every year. Attended by the who’s who in the industry and extensively covered by all media, the shows have always promised drama, magic, high energy and at the center of it all – a stunning collection. Gaurav surprises and outdoes himself every season. Gaurav’s stores too, are an extension of his inspirations – furthering his ‘future primitive’ design tag in the industry. He currently has 2 flagship stores in the country, one at the DLF Emporio Mall in New Delhi and the second at Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda. This year the brand launched a new 5000 sq. feet flagship store in Delhi’s Mehrauli area. A deep design collaboration between Gaurav Gupta and Studio Lotus, this is a first of its kind, exclusive experiential-retail space for Gaurav’s couture designs, including 5 different rooms with individual themes and concepts.
For the coming year, 2019 will celebrate15 years of the brand and the evolution of the ‘sari gown’ – the product most well attributed to the success of the brand. The very idea of this concept sari was started by Gaurav and continues to be the brand’s most iconic creation.
