Nachiket Barve is one of the most celebrated young designers in India today. He is based in Mumbai. Having obtained his design education from the National Institute of Design [NID] in India, as well as a scholarship to Ecole National Superieur des Arts Decoratifs [ENSAD], Paris. He has done an internship at CELINE, Paris. He is attuned to a design philosophy that is global in his aesthetic, but local in techniques and resources. He works extensively with Craft techniques such as applique, cut work, bullion embroidery, resist dyeing and couching which are indigenous and learnt by artisans over generations; however, he reinterprets them for a newer audience by amalgamating unusual and exciting visual references to design product that is emotional, timeless and unique. Nachiket aims at developing products that are timely, yet timeless; global yet local and those that can survive the onslaught of unsustainable fast fashion and be cherished over years. He has been working closely with Merino Wool over the last few years and has created design interventions that help the ancillaries of the Wool industry and help give a boost to the Merino Wool industry. The label has appeared in all major publications and also been lauded by Suzy Menkes, International editor of Vogue and Carine Roitfeld, ex-Editor in chief of Vogue Paris. Nachiket has won the “Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year” award by The British Council and Elle Magazine. The NACHIKET BARVE label was picked up by the US based Fashion Company ‘Rent the Runway’; the label is now available in the US alongside some of the biggest names in global fashion. The label retails at all top boutiques in India and at select stores worldwide. In his off duty hours, Nachiket is an avid wildlife photographer, trekker, traveller and chef. When not in his studio, he is happiest in the forest or by the sea.
